New Mega Airport in Cartagena Nears Final Contract Approval
Colombia is moving closer to building a new mega airport in Cartagena, with a contract valued at more than 4 trillion Colombian pesos nearing final evaluation. The project will sit in the Bayunca area, just south of the historic walled city. It is designed to handle over 17 million passengers per year once fully operational.
Key features of the new airport
The new terminal will cover more than 100,000 square meters, roughly four times the size of the current Rafael Núñez facility. A 3,100‑meter runway will allow direct transoceanic flights, including long‑haul routes from North America, Europe, and parts of Asia. The layout will prioritize passenger flow, security, and fast baggage handling.
Authorities expect the airport to create about 21,000 direct and indirect jobs in the region. Road upgrades along Vía al Mar and La Cordialidad will improve freight and commute times between the new terminal and the historic center.
Why investors and foreign visitors should pay attention
The project is fully financed through private capital via a public‑private partnership, signaling strong confidence from international consortiums already active in Colombia’s airport sector. Cartagena’s tourism arrivals have grown steadily, underlining the need for higher‑capacity infrastructure.
For investors, this mega hub opens opportunities in logistics, hospitality, commercial real‑estate near the terminal, and aviation services. International visitors can expect shorter transfer times, more direct flights, and easier access to nearby attractions on the Caribbean coast.
