The OECD will host its 2025 Local Development Forum in Barranquilla, Colombia, from July 8 to 11. The event’s theme, “Global Inspirations, Local Transformations,” reflects a growing need to localize innovation, inclusion, and sustainability efforts. This marks the first time the OECD will host its Local Development Forum in Latin America.

This high-level forum will bring together over 500 leaders, including government officials, business executives, academics, and grassroots innovators. Attendees will focus on turning global ideas into concrete, local action. The program includes plenary sessions, interactive workshops, roundtables, and study visits to local projects.

Focus on Informality, Inclusion, and Innovation

The forum will place special emphasis on inclusive labor markets, particularly for youth, women, and informal workers. In Colombia, over half the workforce remains in informal employment. Barranquilla’s recent progress in reducing informality and boosting job quality will serve as a case study for other cities.

Participants will explore strategies in key sectors like the care economy, digital transition, and green energy. One standout session, “Doing Business, Doing Good,” will feature entrepreneurs and policymakers discussing how to integrate refugees into local economies.

Another highlight is the Local Innovation Showcase, where cities and regions will present projects focused on social innovation, sustainability, and job creation. Study visits will allow participants to experience Barranquilla’s unique urban transformation firsthand.

Barranquilla as a Global Development Hub

The city has emerged as a leader in local governance and public-private collaboration. Its commitment to education, infrastructure, and cultural heritage has drawn international attention. Hosting the Forum solidifies Barranquilla’s role as a regional hub for dialogue on inclusive growth.

The event aims to build long-term networks, share practical solutions, and inspire action across sectors. The OECD expects the forum to influence future policy on local economic development worldwide.

With its vibrant culture, strong civic leadership, and ongoing transformation, Barranquilla is the ideal host for this global gathering. Attendees will leave with tools, insights, and partnerships to drive inclusive, local change at home.
